Punctual as always but I’m here and only a day late. I hope you all had a lovely weekend? Ours was very quite as Rory wasn’t well but it gave me chance to sort through Rory’s old clothes. Now we have our holiday out of the way it’s time to start planning our winter wardrobes! Autumn is my favourite time of year. I’m all about big chunky knits, bobble hats and a trusty pair of UGG boots. Pass me a pumpkin latte and I’m a happy lady!
But hang on, let’s not get to carried away with the Autumnal vibes. First it’s time for this week’s New Blogger on the Block.
This series is all about showcasing the fantastic new talent on offer in the blogosphere. Each week I’ll be handing over the floor to my guest blogger as we get to know them a little better. This week it’s all about Vicky from Mix Mix Mama.
Please take a minute to introduce yourself and your blog.
My name is Vicky and my blog ‘Mix Mix Mama’ is where I share recipes that I cook for my young family, as well as recipes from my childhood that I am learning as a tribute to my late Filipino mother.
What made you decide to start blogging?
I wanted a place to collate my recipes so that I can one day share them with my children, and to chart my journey to learn recipes that my mother used to cook for me. I follow lots of other fantastic mummy and food bloggers and I loved the idea of having my own blog and being able to interact with fellow bloggers.
What’s your biggest blogging achievement so far?
Returning to blogging after silencing myself for a year, because I was worried about what others thought about me. After a year of merrily blogging away and finding joy in writing up and sharing my recipes, I suddenly became paralysed with insecurity when a mum in the school playground openly rolled her eyes when I was telling someone about my blog. I pretty much crawled under a rock, stopped writing my blog, and stopped talking to people about my recipes. Luckily a year later I decided to have a peek at my blog again, and realised how much I’d missed it, and how it’s ridiculous to let what other people think stop you from doing what you love – especially sneery playground mums.
Is there a particular blogger who you look up to?
So many! Karen Mclean of Secret Squirrel for her fun, vibrant, beautiful recipes, and Emma Conway of Brummy Mummy for keeping it real and making me laugh to the point of snorting tea out of my nose.
Which one of your posts are you most proud of?
‘My Mama’s Arroz Caldo (Chicken and Rice Soup)’ – a post that I wrote as a tribute to my mother on Valentine’s day, which was her birthday – it included my favourite recipe that she used to cook for me when I was young.
Where do you see your blog in 5 years?
As well as it being a useful collection of recipes, I hope it will become a treasured diary of motherhood, of the stories behind the meals we eat as a family, and that it will enable my children and I to connect with my mother and our heritage.
Random Question – What came first, chicken or the egg?
Chicken. No, egg. No, chicken…
Have I told you that I love food? Vicky’s blog is like my idea of heaven! It’s a gorgeous mix of devious recipes and helpful restaurant reviews, presented in a clean and professional style. I’m so happy that Vicky found the strength to tackle her insecurities and continue blogging. It’s very evident how passionate she is about her heritage and is definitely one to watch!
Fancy appearing in the next instalment? I’d love to hear from you!
