Another month another book! February may well be the shortest month of year but it’s certainly got a lot to answer for. There was a point mid month where I suspected there was no hope of even starting a book, let alone finishing one. The book which I had grand plans to finish sat unopened on my bedside table. Cast aside as I busied myself with birthday plans and broken bones. I had all but given up and thrown in the towel, condemned to fail another New Year’s resolution. But then I found it! The perfect book to get me back on track…The Mirror By Deborah A Stansil.
What’s it all about?
When Amy and her daughter Lilly arrive home from town brandishing a new mirror, Scott wastes no time hanging it up in his daughters bedroom. No sooner than the mirror takes pride of place over Lilly’s bed, do things take a turn for the worse. Amy is the first to notice a change in her daughter’s behaviour. Lilly is usually a bubbly, cheery seven year old girl. Overnight she becomes reserved, reluctant to leave her room and even refusing to go to school. Is this cause for concern or is Amy just been irrational? With Scott labelling her as paranoid Amy is quick to write it off as a phase. But is she right to worry? When Lilly starts talking about a new friend Amy begins to wonder if there is more to the mirror than meets the eye. What secrets from their past will the mirror unearth? Will Scott believe his wife and will it be in time to save their daughter?
Why this book?
If you’re a blogger then you’re probably already familiar with Deborah’s work. As well as running a popular blog – My Random Musings and co-hosting a few of my favourite Linky’s (BloggerClubUK & Anything Goes); Deborah is also a freelance writer and Author. The Mirror is Deborah’s forth novel and when I heard she was looking for bloggers to review her new release I pretty much bit her hand off! The blurb got my attention but after reading the first chapter I just knew I needed more.
What’s my verdict?
I’m always excited to give new authors a go. Like most people I have my favourite authors who I always return to time and time again. Their books are reliable reads which I know will have me hooked almost instantly. But there’s just something really satisfying about stepping out of the norm and having a love affair with a new writer. It doesn’t always work out and more times than not you find yourself back in bed with the old classics. Yet once in awhile someone special comes along and takes you by surprise.
I’ll openly admit that I’m fussy when it comes to reading. I’m always open to different genres however I have been known to abandon a book part way through if the style of writing doesn’t agree with me. But I found Deborah’s style of writing captivating. It didn’t take long for me to feel close to the characters, like I already knew them. To say that I couldn’t put this book down is a understatement as it took me just two days to read. To some this may not sound like a triumph but to help put it into perspective it usually takes me around four hours just to read a text!
If you’re looking for an alluring read, brimming with secrets and suspense then The Mirror is a must read!
