Until you become a parent it’s impossible to appreciate the significance of a simple pack of bubbles. To the untrained eye they may look like a recipe for sticky toddler hell but don’t let them fool you. The humble bubble will buy you at least four minutes of uninterrupted bliss for less money than your average cup of coffee. I can’t entirely understand the appeal but something about them makes kids go crazy!
If toddlers were drug dealers they’d meet in underground car parks (in their Little Tikes Cozy Coupes) to buy bubbles by the ounce. Distributing their kiddie crack in the dark corners of the ball pool and paying their debts with organic boobie milk. It seems that while increasingly young children are obsessing over the must have gadgets, they’re still completely besotted with complete tat.
Take for example Rory’s new found love of balloons. Initially it was cute…but now it’s just a hinderance. It makes eating out at any child friendly restaurant virtually impossible. Gone are the days of enjoying a meal. Now we’re expected to inhale our food while bribing our fractious toddler with the promise of a balloon, only to spend the car journey home threatening to dispose of said balloon should it hit either of us on the head one more time.
As much as you hate to admit it, your mum was right. Regardless of how much money you spend, your child will always prefer to play with the box. Kids are weird like that. Either that or they’re just tiny psychopaths who thrive of the satisfaction of watching us suffer! My bet is with the latter. Either way its pretty evident that kids get their kicks from some pretty random shit.
Here’s my top 10 list of peculiar crap that kids go insane for:
1. The electric toothbrush
My daughter absolutely LOVES the electric toothbrush! She wants to brush her teeth (yay) and drives me mad while she’s watching me clean mine and waiting her turn. (Katykicker.com)
2. Blind bags
My little man is OBSESSED with them. I blame YouTube! (JakiJellz.com)
3. The Pizza Express paper hats
I have so many pictures of my two wearing them. (Motherdistracted.co.uk)
4. Stupid rides that cost you an arm and a leg
When Henry was younger he always wanted to go on those rides outside the supermarket that move backwards and forwards for 30 seconds but cost a fortune!! (Sophobsessed.com)
5. Kinder eggs
They nag me for ages. I buy them one, they open it, look disappointed at the toy and never play with it. Then they start with the nagging again. I really don’t get it! (Householdmoneysaving.com)
6. Beanie Boos!
She’s 9 and still spends her pocket money on them! There is obviously something about those huge shiney eyes that say buy meeeeee…. (Livinglifeourway.com)
7. McDonalds happy meal toys!
Despite the number of expensive toys my children have, I’ve never seen them as happy as with a miniature plastic Smurf house!! (Fivelittledoves.com)
Sophie is obsessed with stickers, it’s getting to the point where she won’t do anything without the promise of a sticker in return ? She is obsessed with pulling them off and putting them back on so that they end up with no stick & I keep finding them all over the house!(sophiesnursery.com)
9. Everyday household objects
Brooms! Elian is obsessed with sweeping brushes! We’ve had to buy a mini one for him to stop him trying to carry around our full size one. (Twoheartsoneroof.com)
10. Any sort of collectible card!
They don’t read them, they don’t actually care about the collection (don’t get me started on Lego cards, I was the crazy mother doing swaps at the school gate trying to finish my, ahem, their albums!) they just want the cards. My drawers are overflowing and they pop up randomly all over the house. Drives me bonkers!! I now understand how my mum must have felt about my POG collection. ?(Pinkpearbear.com)
It’s likely we’ll never really understand the fascination with half this junk. However frustrating it may be, unfortunately it’s another one of those parenting moments that we all have to grin and bear. Just remember to cross your fingers and hope it’s a phase which passes quickly.
*Special thanks to Chantele from Two Hearts One Roof for the lovely picture of her gorgeous boy.
